The open source software stack and open hardware standards has created an unprecedented shift in the way how network automation and infrastructure solutions are built on the edge. With the emergence of Akraino stack, edge cloud will require a highly distributed architecture with thousands of small, micro-regional data centers being added at the extreme edge of the network. This is where Open19™ hardware can solve the issue: the open source hardware standard specifies a cage which fits in any 19” rack and allows for servers of four different form factors (full width, half width, single height, double height) for edge cloud deployments. Flex, a founding member of the Open19™ consortium is working towards making Open19™ hardware available to the Akraino community for testing and integration. In this talk, we will provide an overview of the Open19™ implementation by Flex and demonstrates the benefits of integration of Akraino edge stack with Open19™ based hardware which is both interoperable and interchangeable in any open 19” rack environment.
