To run various types of services in a same physical infrastructure, currently, the virtual network technology has been widely adopted in data center. Telco envisioned that next generation mobile service will have heterogenous network requirements, and to fulfill this, 3GPP defined a concept named “Network Slicing” by leveraging network virtualization technology, and standardized into 5G. Nevertheless, the performance degradation using virtual network is not negligible, while Telco production requires line rate performance, this introduces a burden of adopting virtualization technology into telco production. To solve this problem, DPA (Data Packet Acceleration) technology, e.g. DPDK and Smart NIC, has been introduced. It is the only recently a telco start to adopt those technology. With this presentation, I would like to introduce the details of DPA technology, what are pros and cons, and how those technology can be provisioned and managed by ONOS.
