Propelled by the maturity of technologies such as network function virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN), softwarized-networking is drastically changing the way telco infrastructures are architected, implemented and operated. We have witnessed that the physical network function (PNF) have been gradually faded out and replaced by virtual network function (VNF) at telco environment; and we believe that this trend will continue, so that all telco functions will be eventually virtualized in near future. In line with this technology transition, we SK Telecom initiated the Simplified Overlay Networking Architecture (SONA) project in 2016, aims to manage carrier-grade data center network by leveraging SDN technology. SONA is an ONOS based open source project, provides an integration with commercial cloud platforms (e.g., OpenStack, Kubernetes), uses a set of network virtualization technologies (e.g., VLAN, VxLAN) to provide fully independent virtual networks for telco services. In this presentation, we would like to share our efforts on commercializing SONA at SK Telecom, and introduce a set of new features that have been recently added to SONA including curated jenkins CI/CD, data plane/control plane monitoring, automated troubleshooting, control plane failover and etc. A brief SONA roadmap will also be updated.
